Buckeye Firearms Association endorses Robert Cupp for Ohio Supreme Court
by Sean Maloney
Buckeye Firearms Association has endorsed Ohio Supreme Court Justice Robert R. Cupp for reelection to the Ohio Supreme Court in the November 6, 2012 general election.
Ohio Supreme Court Justice Robert Cupp has earned the support of the Buckeye Firearms Association, and the gun owners of Ohio. The words 'don't tell me, show me' have particular meaning when considering the years of support, Ohio Supreme Court Justice, Robert R. Cupp have given our rights to keep and bear arms, as well as, our rights to carry a firearm for personal protection.
In 1997, then State Senator, Justice Cupp worked to pass, and voted in support of House Bill 209. Recognizing how important and valuable shooting ranges are to our law enforcement officers, hunters and recreational shooters; Justice Cupp worked to pass HB209. This legislation was drafted to protect range operators and range developers from harassing lawsuits resulting from ordinances passed after their construction and initial operation.
Justice Cupp's protection and support of our gun rights has continued during his service as Ohio Supreme Court Justice. In 2008, Justice Cupp joined in the majority and held that the City of Clyde, Ohio's ordinance which limited the rights of Concealed Handgun License-holders was unconstitutional, and preempted by Ohio law. Again in 2010, Justice Cupp, joined the majority opinion, in Cleveland v. State of Ohio, and protected Ohio's CHLs from a confusing patch work of licensing requirements, gun possession restrictions, as well as, criminal penalties while traveling from one Ohio county jurisdiction to another.
In addition to Justice Cupp's outstanding record as a civil servant, Justice Cupp volunteers his time to our most important asset - our youth. Justice Cupp has been heavily involved in Ohio 4-H and Scouting. Both organizations provide a comprehensive introduction to shooting sports safety and the fundamentals. For his dedication Justice Cupp has earned the State 4-H Alumni Award, and the Boy Scout Council, Silver Beaver Award.
Ohio Supreme Court justices are elected for six (6) year terms. Passing good legislation is fruitless unless we have good justices to uphold our laws. The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled on many gun related cases in recent years and that trend will likely continue.
Candidates are not able to raise the money needed to reach voters in the way typical candidates do. Word of mouth and grassroots activism are more critical to winning these races. We as pro-Second Amendment activists, gun enthusiasts, Concealed Handgun License-holders must work to return Justice Robert R. Cupp, to the Ohio Supreme Court.
