Buckeye's Ken Hanson authors article in latest national USCCA mag

By Jim Irvine

The United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) is a national organization focusing on concealed carry. Their magazine is “Concealed Carry Magazine.” The latest issue is full of good information, including two articles by fellow Buckeyes and a timely interview with our friend Philip VanCleave, President of Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL), dealing with a newspaper that printed personal information about concealed license holders.

Buckeye Firearms Association Legislative Chair Ken Hanson’s “Self-Defense Bill of Rights” article starts on page 50. This article describes what “Castle Doctrine” or “Stand your Ground” legislation is about. This crucial legislation was recently introduced in Ohio by Senator Steve Buehrer and Representative Lynn Wachtmann. Now is a good time for all Ohioans to review what this legislation does and does not do. The anti-self defense nuts have made their usual claims that it is a “shoot first” or “license to murder” bill. The words “license”, “murder” and “shoot” do not appear anywhere in these bills. Like all things gun related, they are dead wrong, but all gun owners need to understand the bill so we can talk about it with our friends and make sure they are not mislead by the media, who unfortunately tends to be less than honest about this bill.

Gary Hoff has an article describing “TDI’s F.I.S.T. Full of Challenge.” It describes the Tactical Defense Institute
(TDI) Final Intense Scenario Training (FIST) class. F.I.S.T. continues where TDI’s Handgun Level VI (also written about by Mr. Hoff) leaves off. The course is only offered once every two years and it is designed as a continuing education class to update students on recent developments in self defense, as well as practice skills already learned. Like other classes at TDI, expect it to exceed your high expectations. The article is an excellent description of what to expect in a class for seasoned shooters.

The article includes an interview with Mr. VanCleave and what actions the VCDL took in the wake of reckless journalism in their state. Click on the image on the right to download this article. Having met VanCleave at last year’s Gun Rights Policy Conference I can attest to the fact that he and VCDL are top notch. Their success is tied to active grassroots supporters in their state who choose to spend personal time and money and join with fellow activists to defend and restore their firearms rights. They are a road map to success.

It is typical for the same battles to be fought in state after state. It is important for us to analyze how the battles are fought, and thus be better prepared to win when the action moves to our home turf.

The USCCA publishes eight Concealed Carry Magazine issues annually. Each issue has a variety of articles and topics aimed at the person who carries a firearm for self protection. It is a combination of articles written by guest writers such as Hanson and Hoff, and regular columns by Mark Walters and others. Expect them to continue putting out quality information, with the occasional Ohio connection.
