Canton city council president who called CCW laws "completely insane" goes shooting with former Gov. Ted Strickland
by Chad D. Baus
In the wake of the release of explosive dash cam video which showed Canton police officer Daniel Harless unleashing a violent, profanity-laced tirade on a concealed handgun license-holder, saying "People like you don't deserve to @#$%#$ move throughout public. Period!" before threatening to murder the CHL-holder, Canton City Council President Allen Schulman delivered his own tirade against Ohio's concealed handgun licensure laws, calling them "completely insane."
The group Ohioans For Concealed Carry, which obtained and released the dash cam video, immediately called for Schulman's resignation. Schulman hasn't resigned, but has reportedly "made peace" with OFCC after attending an indoor shooting range with the members of the group. WCMH (NBC Columbus) has reported that Schulman invited former Gov. Ted Strickland to attend the event.
From the Canton Repository:
Strickland has been a strong advocate of the second amendment and the state's concealed-carry law, according to an official with the group.
"He shot much better than I did," Schulman said of Strickland, laughing. "I hit the target."
"I'm very gratified to know the members of this organization, some of whom I've come to really like, are intelligent, well trained and they understand the issue of safe gun usage," Schulman said Tuesday.
Schulman said he believes that "all gun owners (should be) equally trained and equally sensitive to the danger of weapons, and I still believe there's places where guns should not be allowed."
Schulman told The Repository he fired three handguns, including a 9 mm pistol and a .45-caliber handgun. He said it was the first time he had fired a weapon since military school about 50 years ago.
Strickland said he and Schulman agreed the law on promptly informing officers needs to be changed.
Schulman doesn't agree with Strickland about allowing guns in restaurants, bars and other businesses.
"Even if you can't totally agree, you can develop a more complete understanding of the other person's point of view," said Strickland.
The City of Canton attempted to prosecute the CHL-holder, but the case was recently dismissed.
Harless is on administrative leave and has a Dec. 1 disciplinary hearing scheduled.
