Cincinnati Post Editorial: Money Before Safety

The Cincinnati Post has published an editorial, entitled "Putting First Things First", in which they voice their approval of reports that the concealed carry debate has been put on the back burner. Their reasoning? Legislators need not have the emotional debate on their hands while trying to fix Ohio's budget woes.

We've prepared a few thoughts for you to consider as you read the piece:

1) Are financial considerations more important than public safety? Will the victims of violent crimes, rape, etc. in 2003 recover easier (if they live, that is) knowing that their elected represenatives would really like to restore their constitutional right to self-defense, but they had more pressing money matters to think about?

2) The Post seems to have made an attempt to avoid using the tired, false rhetoric about the dangers of CCW. But is this, perhaps, simply because those excuses are no longer working?

3) Obviously the Post has not done their homework about CCW's "back burner" status. Sen. Lynn Wachtmann is set to introduce the 125th General Assembly's first CCW bill, with about a third of the entire Senate signed on as co-sponsors.

4) It is very interesting to see the Post urge the General Assembly to wait on the Supreme Court ruling from Hamilton County. If opponents of CCW are pinning their last hopes on the Hamilton County Supreme Court case, I think we can all agree we've come a long way forward.
