Fort Worth man killed after breaking into ex-girlfriend's apartment to 'confront' her

A 37-year-old man was shot and killed on the morning of Feb. 9 after breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in northwest Fort Worth, leading to what authorities are describing as a case of self-defense.

According to the Fort Worth Police Department, officers responded to a call about a shooting at an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Watermark Drive, near NW Loop 820, about 11:30 a.m. Feb. 9. When they arrived, they discovered the body of Michael James Andree on the third-floor landing.

Investigators say Andree had forced his way into the apartment and waited for her to arrive to “confront” her. He then confronted his ex-girlfriend and another man as they were entering the home.

The man accompanying the woman, whose identity has not been released, pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at Andree, hitting him at least once.

Andree was pronounced dead at the scene, and police have confirmed that no arrests have been made. The shooter is cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues.

Texas law allows the use of deadly force in self-defense, especially when an unlawful entry occurs. This incident appears to fall within the state’s well-established Castle Doctrine, which protects individuals who defend themselves, their families, and their property from intruders.

While the exact relationship between the woman and the shooter remains unclear, the circumstances surrounding the shooting highlight the importance of the Second Amendment and the right to self-defense. Armed citizens are the first line of defense against violent threats, and this case serves as a stark reminder of why those rights matter.

This marks the ninth homicide in Fort Worth in 2025, and many were justified. This is an increase compared to three homicides during the same period in 2024, according to police data.

The investigation is ongoing, but based on the information released, this incident appears to be a justified act of self-defense. As more details emerge, it is likely to reinforce the belief held by many in the pro-gun community that responsible gun ownership can save lives when seconds matter most.
