Headline: Man shot attempting to break into Dayton home
WHIO (CBS Dayton) reported late last week that a homeowner was able to defend herself with a firearm when a man with a lengthy criminal history attempted to unlawfully enter her home a around 4:40 a.m.
From the article:
The owner of a Baltimore Street home where a morning shooting occurred said her cousin shot a man who attempted to climb through a window.
...
“When crews arrived on the scene, the individual that was shot was found on the porch laying there unconscious,” [Dayton Police Sgt. Matt] Beavers said.
Medics transported the suspect to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment.
The homeowner told our crew her cousin, who lives in the house, fired one shot at the intruder when he attempted to climb through a window and grab her.
The cousin’s husband and several young children were home when the shooting occurred.
In separate coverage by WDTN (NBC Dayton), Sgt. Beavers was quoted as saying “You have a right to protect your home and I think everybody understands that right, that you need to keep your home, your family safe.”
Under Ohio's Castle Doctrine law, if someone unlawfully enters or attempts to enter an occupied home or temporary habitation, or occupied car, citizens have an initial presumption that they may act in self defense, and will not be second-guessed by the State.
