Headline: Ohio gears for deer-gun season
The Canton Repository is reporting on this year’s popular deer-gun season, which opens statewide Nov. 27, offering all hunters expanded opportunities to harvest a whitetail. As noted previously on this website, the upcoming season will include an extra weekend and the new apprentice license program.
From the story:
- The deer-gun season will run through Dec. 3, from one half-hour before sunrise to sunset each day. For the first time in Ohio, hunters will have the opportunity to hunt an extra weekend, which will be Dec. 16-17. Apprentice hunting licenses will allow new hunters, both adults and youths, to sample the experience under the supervision of a licensed adult, before completing a hunter education course.
An estimated 600,000 white-tailed deer are accounted for before the gun season starts. The Division of Wildlife anticipates a kill of more than 115,000 deer during the nine-day season.
The story goes on to note that the white-tailed deer is the most popular game animal in Ohio, frequently pursued by generations of hunters. Deer hunting contributes an estimated $266 million to the state’s economy each year and helps support thousands of jobs.
