KEY RACE: Cincinnati Post endorses Evelyn Stratton (R) for Supreme Court

Completing what has clearly become a major media sweep in Ohio, the Cincinnati Post has joined the the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Columbus Dispatch, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Toledo Blade, the Akron Beacon Journal and the Canton Repository (not to mention OFCC PAC and the NRA!) in its enthusiastic support for Justice Evelyn Stratton (R) for Ohio Supreme Court.

Justice Stratton, the daughter of American missionaries, was born in Bangkok and raised in southeast Asia at the height of the Vietnam war. She came to the states in 1971 with with a few hundred dollars in her pocket to attend college, eventually earning a BA in history from the University of Akron and then a law degree from Ohio State University. After practicing law in Columbus with two firms, she was elected to the Common Pleas court there in 1988 and again in 1994. She was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Ohio Supreme Court in 1996 and elected to a full term the same year.

The Post notes that "on a court marked by 4-3 votes on such key issues as school funding, workers' compensation and tort reform, she has been a consistent, articulate voice — often in the minority — for judicial restraint."

The Post endorses Justice Stratton. We like the job she's done in her first term. We believe her public service outside the court has been exemplary. She has the edge in terms of experience, and we hope that experience is put to good use over the next six years.

Commentary by Chad D. Baus:
We can't say it enough - this is turning out to be a much closer race than the pros had expected, mainly because of the vagaries of name recognition in such a large state.
