Larry Moore: League of Ohio Sportsmen/Ohio Wildlife Federation Hunter Educator of the Year
Long-time Buckeye Firearms Assocation volunteer Leader Larry S. Moore has been named the League of Ohio Sportsmen/Ohio Wildlife Federation Hunter Educator of the Year.
"It is exciting to be honored for hunter education work and recognized by your peers," Moore says. "There are people in the League who have been teaching for 40 years."
Larry first became a hunter education instructor in 1989, and since then has been very active in District 5 (Division of Wildlife southwest Ohio). He has provided countless review and suggestions fro the hunter education manual and strives to make the course as positive as possible. He has served on the District 5 Cadre team for 15 years, and this team annually trains new instructors. Not only does he hold courses in Greene County but he also helps in other counties when needed. Larry has been a firearm instructor at the Ohio Wildlife Federation Coonskin Cap Brigade youth camp for close to 20 years and has been instrumental in making the annual event a success. He is a long-time member of Greene County Fish and Game Association and serves as their legislative coordinator. He is very active in the apprentice hunting license program.
Larry’s daughter Tiffany Atley and son Trent Moore are also hunter education instructors. Tiffany, Trent and Travis Moore regularly return to the Coonskin outdoor camp to teach with their father.
"Hunter education is about family and sharing my outdoor heritage with others," Moore observes. I am very proud that two of my children are instructors and continuing to share that heritage. All of us enjoying taking new hunters afield and introducing others to the shooting sports."
"Much of what I have been involved with has been a strong team effort that involved other instructors and the Greene County Fish and Game Association," he notes. "I am both honored and humbled to be chosen for this special award."
The depth of Moore's work to further hunter education efforts includes having served on the team that helped write the latest hunter education manual, and having served on the District 5 team that conducted special hunter education core course evaluation in conjunction with Michigan State University. This team developed what is now the Division of Wildlife Home Study Hunter Education Course. The team received recognition in 1995 from the Division of Wildlife and the US Fish and Wildlife Service for their commitment over a two-year period to this effort.
Moore was honored in 2005 by the US Sportsmen Alliance for his work in the legislative area on behalf of sportsmen and in protecting the funding of the Ohio Division of Wildlife. He also received the Conservation Communicator of the Year award from the League of Ohio Sportsmen/Ohio Wildlife Federation in 2001 for his work getting an outdoor column into his local newspapers (now the combined Greene County Dailies).
