Tale of Two Cities: Dayton store owner killed; Hartford robbers jailed
Trotwood man shot, killed in robbery
DAYTON | A 46-year-old Trotwood man was shot and killed during a robbery as the man closed up his Dayton business on New Year's Eve, according to Dayton police.
The man and his adult son were closing Gina's Party Store, 3025 Salem Ave., around 10:50 p.m. when the man was accosted in the parking lot by a male wearing a blue stocking cap, according to Dayton Police Lt. John Bardun. The victim was shot several times with a handgun. Police were unsure if the assailant stole any money from him before fleeing.
The shooter apparently headed on foot north, around the back of the building, toward Hillcrest Avenue, Bardun said. Dayton police crews searched that neighborhood in the early hours of the New Year.
The victim was found lying in the parking lot of his business near his a white, late-model Lexus SUV. Both the front and rear driver's side doors of the vehicle were open.
The man's adult son was apparently not injured in the attack. Police were interviewing him after the robbery. The victim died at the scene.
UPDATE: "No wonder why all of these stores keep going out of business. They get robbed every other day."
Meanwhile, in a state that allows its law-abiding citizens to carry a
concealed handgun for self-defense, a different outcome resulted when this store owner was attacked by two criminals during a holdup: (click on the "Read More..." link below)

A superior court judge in Hartford, Conn., said he was "happy to see that some storekeepers protect their property against these marauders" as he sentenced two thugs who were shot and wounded by a store employee during a holdup. Judge William L. Tierney bluntly rejected defense pleas to send the men to a reformatory instead of prison.
• Nearly one thousand Ohioans would not have suffered a violent criminal attack if Ohio House Bill 12 was passed into law in June, according to a report released by Ohioans For Concealed Carry. The report compares estimates based on FBI Uniform Crime Report data and the nationwide "before and after" effects experienced after the passage of concealed carry legislation.
University of Georgia Professor David Mustard used raw FBI data from nearly 20 years of crime reports when comprising the report for OFCC. Analysis of the results suggest that as each month passes, the political obstruction imposed by the Ohio Senate and Governor Taft are responsible for approximately 3 murders, 18 rapes, 29 robberies, and as many as 96 aggravated assaults.
While all eyes look to the General Assembly for leadership on this issue, defenseless Ohioans continue to be victimized, and the Ohio Crime Clock tally (located at the top-right of the www.buckeyefirearms.org homepage) continues to rack up numbers of Ohioans who would not have been victimized if HB12 were already law.
This report puts it in black and white. Every political delay - brought on by a few Republican Senators unwilling to veto a governor of their own party - brings more victimization to Ohioans, in the form of rape, murder, assault and robbery.
