Endorsee: One party rule cost Columbus $20 million from gun owners

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that just as Democrats seek to make one-party rule in state government a big issue as the scandals pile up at the Governor's Mansion, Republicans running for Columbus City Council are trying to make it an issue as they try to win seats at Democrat-controlled City Hall.

Among those Republicans running for council is Buckeye Firearms Association endorsee Phil Harmon, who points to one-party rule as the reason for the city's recent loss of $20 million in revenue from Second Amendment supporters.

Phil Harmon, a Republican not endorsed by the county party in his campaign for the council, said there must be some opposition on the council to debate issues.

He pointed to the assault weapons ban that the City Council passed 6-0 in July.

"That cost local businesses $20 million," said Harmon, referring to the decision by the National Rifle Association to pull its 2007 convention out of Columbus.

Harmon said that’s why he supports district representation to get opposing views on the council. All seven members are now elected at-large.

The council is unwilling to vote against Coleman’s policies because he is a fellow Democrat, Harmon said.
