Unarmed Ohio campus security guards - and they'll stay that way

While college campuses across the country examine their security procedures in the wake of the VT massacre, most campus security experts are stressing that while they try to plan for all contingencies, there really is no way to prevent one lone predator with a death wish from wreaking havoc on a college campus.

But one Ohio college dean thinks she has the answer to a heavily armed criminal with intent on murdering as many people as possible: martial arts training!

“This is a good time to remind us that no one is exempt from an issue like security,” said Dr. Betsy Boze, dean of the Kent State University, Stark campus. Boze, of the Kent State Stark campus, said the commuter school has campus security. But unlike [another nearby campus], the guards are not armed and don’t have arresting powers. She said the university is not likely to change that policy either.

Boze said she favors training security guards in tactics like martial arts, instead of arming them. “It’s usually a better way to deal with campus incidents, rather than force,” she said. “It’s the same reason I don’t want to keep a gun in my house.” “We can have an armed police force here in a very short period of time,” she said.

Of course, Ms. Boze's thinking is the exact kind of 'logic' that was exhibited at Virgina Tech last fall after a murderous escaped convict lurked near campus.

After Virginia legislators rejected legislation which would have extended self-defense rights to college students who were properly trained and licensed, a VT spokesperson Larry Hincker praised the state legislature for allowing campus gun bans to continue, saying "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

It is a sad testament that these university officials are acting in ways they hope will allow students, faculty and visitors to “feel” safe rather than “be” safe.
