As Obama plots a gun ban, our challenge is helping the next generation learn the truth

By Jim Shepherd

[Late last week], mainstream media was buzzing about how the President was "willing to consider" some limitations on firearms.

As my kids would say as they rolled their eyes "what-ever." Baloney is always baloney. This administration is all about limiting firearms ownership.

I could respect their positions if they didn't try camouflaging another attempt to put more controls on the average gun-owning, law-abiding American citizen.

This time, it's to help stabilize the political situation in Mexico?

Pardon me, but que?

Yesterday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was quoted as having told Mexican authorities that she understood the United States had to share the responsibility for the drug wars raging across the country.

Her reasoning? Firearms legally purchased in the United States and then smuggled into Mexico.

Yep, there's apparently a chain of gun stores along the Mexican border that enable smugglers to slide across from Mexico, offload their cargo of illegal workers and drugs, then do a quick turnaround, hit the drive-through automatic weapons, rockets, mortars and grenades window of this unique chain of stores and be back across the border in time for the latest round of execution-style murders.

It might sound really plausible when repeated by some official spokesperson, but it's just another thick slice of anti-gun baloney.

If there were licensed gun dealers violating the law by making illegal gun sales, there are already tough laws on the books to deal with them.

So, once again, we find ourselves as described by a reader "defending the goal line in almost every instance."

He then asked, "Is it at all possible to have Second Amendment - friendly legislators sponsor legislation intended to rollback poorly crafted laws among the 20,000 + that are already on the books?"

That's an interesting idea - and it's not without merit.

An unfortunate truth, however, is that while majority leaders in Congress readily say they oppose any ban on any type of semi-automatic weapons, they're not about to allow measures designed to repeal bad gun laws to come to the floors of either house.

But here's a parting thought that seems to becoming more apparent each time we read one of the growing number of newspaper and magazine obituaries: the upcoming generation of Americans isn't buying the mainstream version of how things are in America.

It is the middle-age generation that's still drinking the mainstream media flavor of truth. Fortunately, the younger generation is relying on information from the "new media" - and they are voting with their feet and their finances. As the old Broadway review said of the bad show "people are staying away by the thousands".

We can only hope that we can get to them quickly with our fact-based arguments.

If we don't, they'll be absorbed into the growing numbers of "sheeple" who are willing to ignore virtually anything outside their immediate sphere of influence if they'll just be left alone.

Today is not a time to be left alone.

It is time to stand up and speak out. I heard one caller on a local talk radio show put a pretty succinct message out yesterday.

"In America today, the clothes have no emperor."

Kerry: No National Guard to Southern Border, Bring Back Assault Weapons Ban

Sending National Guard to the U.S. border of Mexico is "premature and possibly counterproductive," but reviving the assault weapons ban would help end the drug-related violence in Mexico, Sen. John Kerry said Monday.
