Second Amendment once again at stake in Ohio
Dear Second Amendment Patriot,
BFA-endorsed Sharon Kennedy is running for re-election as Ohio Supreme Court Justice. Running against her is a 2012 BFA PAC D-Rated Democrat who thinks the Second Amendment is obsolete.
So, once again, the Second Amendment and our Constitutionally guaranteed rights are at stake here in Ohio.
What you have to understand is this: no matter what pro-gun laws we have, every one will be challenged in court. Open carry. Concealed carry. Castle doctrine. Stand your ground. State preemption. You name it, at some point they will all end up challenged in court cases that can work their way up to the Supreme Court of Ohio.
For some time now, we've seen things go our way. We've made dramatic and historic changes that have allowed our citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights and have inspired other states to follow suit.
But all it takes is ONE case. ONE bad ruling. And we can say "goodbye" to years of hard-fought progress here in the Buckeye state.
Here's the situation ...
Ohio House Democrat Tom Letson is term-limited and announced his candidacy for the Ohio Supreme Court late last year. And it's hard to imagine a worse candidate.
In June 2012, he took to the floor of the House and spoke out against the passage of House Bill 495, the bill for Reciprocity and Concealed Carry Modernization. He is on record wanting to make Ohio's private, personal information from concealed handgun license records open to the public. And to top it off, he has make it crystal clear that he thinks the Second Amendment is obsolete.
Think about that for a moment. Tom Letson wants to serve on the highest court in Ohio and believes that the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America is obsolete.
This is a direct quote:
"We don't have a militia any more! We have police officers. We have military. We don't have a militia any more. Just thought I'd point that out. Not that I think that it's escaped any of the lawyers here."
This is why it is vital that we get behind our endorsed candidate Sharon Kennedy and help her win in this election.
Because of her modesty and because of strict judicial election rules, Sharon cannot tell you how good she is on the issue of gun rights in Ohio. But WE can.
Sharon Kennedy is a true patriot. She enthusiastically believes in our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Kennedy is a former police officer, an experienced sport shooter, and an avid gun enthusiast. She not only believes in our right to self-defense, she exercises that right with an Ohio Concealed Handgun License and loves to spend time at the range with friends.
Like you, Sharon believes that nobody - no government, no politician, no organization - has the right to tell us when, where, how, or if we can defend our gift of life. She refutes the George Soros / Mayor Bloomberg school of thought that the elites should make decisions for the rest of us. We are Ohioans and Americans. And WE reserve ALL the rights enumerated in the Constitution for WE the people.
I'm not getting all this from a press release. Sharon and her campaign people did not write this letter. I know these things about Sharon because I know Sharon. I know her record. I know how she thinks. She's a friend. She's one of us.
Here's Sharon in her own words:
We live in the greatest country in the world.
As Americans we are free. Free to say, write, dream, achieve an do what we desire. Our freedom does not come from government. Our freedom comes from the Constitution.
With your support ... I will honor the Constitution by upholding the law, not creating it or legislating it from the bench.
Passing good legislation is fruitless unless we have good justices like Sharon Kennedy to uphold our laws. The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled on many gun-related cases in recent years and that trend will likely continue. Ohio Supreme Court Justices are elected for 6-year terms. So whoever wins this November will be making decisions about your gun rights for a long time.
So here's what we need to do ...
First, you need to get out and VOTE on Tuesday, November 4. Mark your calendar. Let nothing stop you. Remember that the Ohio Supreme Court race is pretty far down on the ballot sheet. You have to work your way through many other races to get to the part where you can VOTE for Sharon Kennedy.
Second, I'm asking you to DONATE RIGHT NOW. I know times are tough. I know you may be watching every dollar. But I want you to dig deep and give whatever you can today. Right now.
As you read this, the gun control groups are flooding their anti-gun candidate with donations. They're hoping to outspend Kennedy. They're hoping to put an anti-gun voice in the Ohio Supreme Court so they can legislate from the bench and truly make the Second Amendment obsolete. They're counting on you being too lazy or too uninformed to understand just how big of a deal this really is.
Let's give them a big surprise! We've done it before.
We surprised them when we won two U.S. Supreme Court Cases. We surprised them when we won concealed carry and castle doctrine in Ohio. We surprised them when we struck down every gun ban in Ohio. We surprised them the first time Sharon ran and won a seat on the Ohio Supreme Court. And now, with your help, we're going to surprise them when we re-elect a true blue Second Amendment advocate to the Ohio Supreme Court!
Because of strict election rules, Kennedy can't fight back the way she needs to. So it's up to us. It's up to you and me and our friends and families to DONATE NOW.
The election is coming up fast on November 4. In this short time, Sharon will be campaigning hard across our Buckeye State. She needs our help. If she loses this race, we ALL lose.
Go to Sharon's donation page now and give as generously as you can... $250 if you can afford it. Or $100. Or even $50 or $25. If we ALL give something, any amount, we can help Sharon Kennedy keep her seat on the Ohio Supreme Court to represent our Second Amendment convictions.
Our laws are only as good as the judges who rule on them. Sharon Kennedy has your back. Can I count on you to have hers?
Thank you for taking the time to read this. And thank you in advance for being the staunch American patriot I know you are.
Sincerely yours,
Jim Irvine, Chairman
Buckeye Firearms Association
